Show January 8, 1959 THE SPRINGVILLE (UTAH) HERALD Page Three Cement Company To Furnish Pozzolan for Dam Great Western Aggregates, Inc.; of Laramie, has been awarded a contract to supply 42,000 tons of pozzolan for massive Flaming Gorge Dam. The dam is to be built near Vernal. The aggregat firm, a wholly-owne- d subsidiary of Ideal Cement Company, manufactures the pozzolan from shale found near Lara-mie. The shale is calcined at high temperature in a rotary kiln, then ground to cement fineness. The finished product ; meets a variety of Federal Government and ASTM speci-fications. Pozzolanic concrete is fre-quently used where large quan-tities of mass concrete must be placed. In optimum propor-tions with Portland cement pozzolan in concrete will im-prove workability, lower heat of hydration and thermal shrinkage, increfi.se water tight-ness, improve resistance to at-tack by sulfate soils and water, reduce undesirable reactions be-tween certain aggregates, and cement, and reduce costs. Contrary to the behavior of many pozzolans, Idealite poz-zolan, in proportions, does not increase the water requirement or shrinkage of concrete in which it is used according to extensive tests conducted by independent laboratories. Flaming Gorge Dam a Bu-reau of Reclamation project will have a height of 495 ft., crest of 1,270 ft., and contain 922,000 cubic yards of con-crete. The reservoir capacity will be approximately 3,697,000 acre-fe- et of water to be used for irrigation and power. Shipments of pozzolan from G. W. A. will begin in late 1959 or early 1960. The dam is scheduled for completion in 1962.
