Show Brigham Young, leader of the Mormon pioneers who settled in Utah, was one of the greatest colonizers who ever lived. During Dur-ing the thirty years from 1847, when he led his advance party into Salt Lake Valley, to his death in 1877, Brigham Young directed the settlement of more than 360 towns in the American Ameri-can west. These settlements were located not only m Utah, but also in California, Nevada, Idaho and Arizona. Under the leadership the west's Mormon population grew from 2000 in 1847 to some 140,000 in 1877. |
