Show Sympathetic. The late Congressman Russell of Connecticut used to tell the following, follow-ing, which was his favorite story: One of a gang of laborers was suddenly sud-denly killed in an accident, and an Irishman was delegated by the foreman fore-man to go and break the sad news to the unfortunate man's wife. "Be very careful," said the foreman, "to sympathize sym-pathize with Mrs. Jones all you can, for it will be a terrible shock to her to learn of John's death." Pat, however, forgot what to say. Mrs. Jones herself came to the door In response to the knock, and Pat promptly asked: "Does the Widow Jones live here?" "I am Mrs. Jones," replied the woman, wom-an, "but I am not a widow. My husband hus-band is working to-day, as usual." "They told me it was on this street," said Pat, "and, begorra, I'm pretty sure this is the very house." "But I tell you my husband Is Hying," Hy-ing," protested Mrs. Jones. "You're a liar!" exclaimed Pat "Sure, they're brlngin' his body around the corner now." |
