Show Acetylene Rendered Harmless. By a recent invention it is believed that acetylene can be used for public and private illumination without any danger of explosion, even if the -gas if subjected to the test of an electric spark. To obtain this result the sctorage cylinder is packed with asbestos or brick discs the latter ol SO per cent porosity and filled with, acetone. The acetylene is then pumped pump-ed into the cylinder or tank under a pressure of ten atmospheres. It is found that the acetone dissolves, or absorbs the acetylene to the extent of one hundred fold the mathematical capacity of the cylinder. The gas is now being used on several railroads in this manner for illuminating purposes. |
