Show Absent. Among the many stump speaker who invaded the Middle West during the first McKinley campaign was Corporal Cor-poral Tanner, the well-known pension attorney. At one small town in Illinois Illi-nois he was suddenly taken ill, and the physician who had been summoned directed, di-rected, among other things, that he soak his feet in hot water. "I don't think that would do any good," said the Corporal, with a very serious air. "Why not?" asked the doctor, with some feeling. Glancing down at the artificial substitutes, sub-stitutes, the other replied : "They were both shot off in '63 at Gettysburg." |
