Judge Henry Shields, 77 years of :k'c, pioneer attorney, mining niau and peace offiner, died at his home in Park City at 9 o'clock 3-:sterday morning after af-ter an illness of less than, a week. Stomach trouble was tho cause of dentil. Judge Shields had lived an unusually activo lifo and his activities did not cease until he was stricken with his fatal fa-tal illness a week ago today. Judge Shields was bom at Belfast, Ireland, March 20, 1S12, and came to tho United States with his parents when he was eight years of age. i'or a considerable period the family resided in Sew York City, where tiie young man attended school and followed the trade of boilerniaker. Later he was attracted to the middle west and for several years was a fireman fire-man on a Mississippi river steamboat. Iu the late '60 's he came to the intermountain inter-mountain west and located in Montana, where he participated iu the famous Alta gulch and FTeneh gulch mining excitement. ex-citement. He also later lived for several sev-eral years iu Helena. In 3871 Judge Shields came to Utah, first settling at Alta, where ho followed fol-lowed mining and where he also was a deputy United States marshal for several sev-eral years. In !79 he went to Park City and up to the time of his death was an alert participant in the activities activ-ities of that camp. Judgo Shields began the practice of law iu the iustieo courts of Park City in 18S2. In 1S89 ho was admitted to the bar. In 1883 and 1881 Judge Shields was the law partner of Judge V. I. Snyder of this city, under the firm name of Suyder & Shields. In 1888 Judge Shields was appointed probato judge for Summit county by President- Cleveland. When President Cleveland was succeeded by President Harrison, Judge Shields was reappointed reappoint-ed and when President Cleveland was reelected to tho presidency ho was again named for tho post, serving uu-til uu-til statehood, at which time the office . becaire. elective. I Shortly after retiring from the office of probate judge, Judge Shields was I elected county attorney of Summit j county and served for two years. He also was chosen city attorney of Park City in 19u0 and served two years, i In add- ;on to his widow, formerly I Miss Aramintz Pates, Judge Shields is survived by three daughters. Airs. (J.
