James, for more than forty-five years a prominent figure in business and mining circles in Salt Lake, died at his homo in Long Beach, Calif., Sunday afternoon, af-ternoon, according to advices received here yesterday. Mr. James had been in precarious health for a considerable period, and it was for tills reason that he had been making mak-ing his home at Long Beach. It was eight weeks ago, however, that Mr. James' condition assumed an alarming aspect. Mr. James was born at Harper's Ferry, Fer-ry, Va. , b ti t as a boy m ov e d wit h h i u parents to the vicinity of Gal es.hu rg, 111. It was here that Mr. James became well acquainted with U. S. Grant, later twice president of the United States. Mr. James often referred to the fact that he sold many hides to Grant, who at that time was in the tannery business at Galesburg. Mr. James served in the civil war with the Twentieth Wisconsin regiment, and when mustered out in JSt5, entered Mount Morris college, w here ho took a course in mining engineering and metallurgy. Coming to Pi ah in the early ' 70s, Mr. James was a pioneer in the Bingham mining min-ing cam) and also was interested in various other camps, including Big Cottonwood Cot-tonwood and Alta, throughout his long I :nid active life. In November, 1 ST 2, Mr. J James became a member of Mount Mori Mo-ri ah lodge, V and A . M., and later was grand master of tho grand lodge of L'tah. Still later he also was made a I members of the Masonic. Veterans' association asso-ciation of the Pacific coast. Mr. James never eared for political life, but he was a member of the Salt Lake city council for one t erm. On April 24, 1S7G, he was married to Elizabeth Hull, who, with sisters and three brothers survives him. The announcement 13 made that the body will be brought to Salt Lake lor funeral services and burial. |
