With a gathering of 200 or more sheep raisers and buyers from all parts of the country as an audience, the fourth annual ram sale of the National Woolgrowers' association opened at the state fait grounds yesterday afternoon. The first day's business was limited to offerings of Rambotiillet rams and .ewes and in the session the sales totaled 549,477.50. The highest price of the day was paid for a Itamoouiliet ram from the University Univer-sity of Illinois by tiie Butterfield Livestock Live-stock com pan v of Weiser, Idaho, which bid SKJOO before it could get the prize winner of the eastern agricultural college. col-lege. A close second was the Bullard Brothers' ram, which C. A. Kimble of Hanford, Cal., bought for $1450. Sales as a whole were sjow and the buyers were careful in placing their bids, though occasionally there was considerable considera-ble and spirited competition for particularly particu-larly des-irable sheep. The bidding for D. W. Candland's eleven head of Rambouillet j yearling ewes was particularly keen and the prize breeders brought a price of $lS-5 each. The highest price for ewes was paid for seven head offered by tiie Butterfield Livestock company at $220 each ,by the Baldwin Sheep company of Hay Creek, Ore. Dwight B. Lincoln, the auctioneer from Marysvihe, Ohio, kept the bidders interested, both in the offerings and his comments on them. When their attention would begin to lag, he reminded them to "keep their minds on their lesson," and they followed his lead. S. W. McClure, secretary of the National Woolgrowers' association, assisted the auctioneer. F. J. Hagenbarth, president of the sheepmen's sheep-men's organization, started the saics by stating that provision has-been made for bringing hay to the drought-stricken regions re-gions should the "hay profiteers" continue con-tinue to ask exorbitant prices for their fodder. He said that, while he was not at liberty to state what these arrangements are, the sheepmen can rest assured their interests will be cared for.
