New York's musical and social seasons had brilliant inaugurals tonight with the opening of the Metropolitan Opera nnd the horse show twin events, that for years have marked the advent of the winter's activities ac-tivities of the Four Hundred and the followers of art. The Metropolitan offering of-fering was Puccini's Tosea with Gcral-dinc Gcral-dinc Farrar in the title role. Caruso, fresh from triumphs scored in opera staged in a Mexico City bull ring, shared with Miss Farrar in the honors and applause. High cost of living also played a role. With the orchestra chairs raised in price to seven dollars, a golden stream w-as poured into the box office coffers by one of the largest throngs that ever tilled the Metropolitan. Subscriptions for the opera season have readied a record-breaking total of $1,000,000. The Puccini work was performed with the same creditable skill and artistry that has marked this offering in other years. Farrar as Tosca, Caruso as the painter Mario, and Antonio Seotti, the Scarpia, received many curtain calls. Arias that thrilled the audience were Farrar 's rendition in the second act of Vissi'd'Arte and Caruso's singing of E 'Luce van le Stclle in the final. Caruso Ca-ruso has made only Inefficient appearances appear-ances in Tosca in recent years, but critics tonight agreed that he iwver sang the role of the unfortunate painter better. Robert Moranzoni was at the conductor 's desk. tJlulio Oatti Casazza, his twelfth vear as managing director, believes tlio Metropolitan Met-ropolitan opera season now beginning will eclipse in artistic production and financial return that of any previous season in the history of opera in this city. |
