Show PIEIIITIC TI Bl WORK Forms Cushion Between Road aand Load, Provides Traction, Lessens Noise. A pneumatic tire is placed upon a car to act as a cushion between the road on the one hand, and the mechanism and passengers in the car on the other. : This is its primary object. . It also ia used to provide traction and to prevent noise and skidding when the vehicle is propelled at high speeds over the road. In designing a pneumatic tire for an automobile it should be with an idea of making it cost the consumer the lowest low-est possible amount per mile of service consistent with properly performing the above functions. In order to accomplish this, all parts should be of equal strength, so that, if possible, it should be Hko the "onc-hoss shay" when it is worn out, all parts should wear out at once. It is only by study and experience, continually strengthening the weakest part, that it can be brought to this position. The carcass, fabric, friction, breaker strip, tread rubber, inner tube, typo of rim, character of roads, speed and weight to be carried, all have to be 1 given consideration. It is very easy to I strengthen some one part, such as mak-; mak-; ing a longer wearing tread, a bet tcr ! wearing carcass, a moro puncture-proof ; tire, etc., but it is very difficult to do ! this without weakening some other fea- lure, or at least nullifying the effect of i the improvement by the fact that some othor part does not last, as long as the j part improved. Such an improvement I would, of course, be of no advantage and would probably increase the cost 1 of the tire as well as the cost per mile. Many concerns have started out to ; market a puncture-proof tire, centering all of their designing on this one idea, ; only to find out that, although they have succeeded in preventing punctures, i thev have weakened the tire in some ' other pa.rt, so that the cost per mile to the user more than offsets tlv advantage ad-vantage of being free from punctures. There are many tire fillers or air sub-1 sub-1 stitutes on the market, but tire mrtnu-: mrtnu-: facturers will not guarantee their tires if such fillers are used ini-tend nf air, as thev ar, very injurious to the tire. Heavy t reads have b"cn pat upon tire? which would wear from S'V'O'J to ;-.')00 miles, wtvn the carcass under them would not last one-i.-nth as ieng.
