Show Propose a Tax of $500,000 on Saloon Licenses COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 29. Immediate Im-mediate Introduction of legislation legis-lation providing for a prohibition tax running perhaps as high, as $500,-000 $500,-000 to prevent the sale of intoxicants intoxi-cants between the date of ratification ratifica-tion of tha peace treaty and January 16, 1920, when constitutional prohibition pro-hibition goes into effect, will be asked of congress by the Antisaloon league, according to E. H. Cherring-ton, Cherring-ton, secretary of the league's executive execu-tive committee, in an announcement tonight. He declared that there was littlo doubt that such a measure, if introduced, would pass. Existing and impending labor troubles would aid the passage of such a measure, he asserted. The amount of liquor in the United States he estimated at 65,000,000 gallons. He stated that in it3 proposal to dry leaders in congress the league would set $100,000 as the minimum figure for the prohibitive tax. A conference of dry leaders will be hold in Washington at once, he concluded. |
