Show autoSent Machine Roils 300 Feet Down Embankment in Parley's Canyon. Narrowly escaping instant death, when his machine crashed over a steep enbank-ment enbank-ment into the jagged rocks of the canyon side, James Baker, -12 years of age, residing re-siding at 134 Regent street, an employe if the stato road commission in Parley's Par-ley's canyon, was brought to the county hospital vest erday evening in a serious condition. Me was suffering from a serious seri-ous loss of blood caused by deep lacerations lacera-tions about the head and probably internal in-ternal injuries. Baker was found by Don Hout, a driver of a Park City stage, who was passing the scene of the accident, while on his way to Park City. Baker was unconscious uncon-scious and was lying clear of the wreck of his auto. On reaching the hospital the injured man regained consciousness. The point where his machine left the road rounds the moun tain side with a double curve. Tracks left by the wheels indicated that the driver of the machine had lost control or that the sneering apparatus ap-paratus had refused to operate. Striking a rock ledge placed there by t he road workers, the machine hounded outward, and, after striking the mountainside, rolled down the steep incline. The injured man was employed as the engi neer of a steam shovel used by the road commission to work in the canyon. Fach night he would cmne to Salt Lake in his automobile. Yesterday, fellow workers work-ers said he complained of being ill. As usual he left work at 5 o'clock and started lo Salt Lake. He was discovered shortly after by the stage driver and brought to Salt Lake. F. H. Stewart, foreman of the state road commission in Parley's canyon, was notified of the accident, shortly after it occurred, and, with a gang nf men, went to the scene. A gold ring and money carried by the injured man were found on the mountainside by them. The police pat rol, with Capt ain of Police Po-lice Henry C. Taggart in charge, left the city immediately on receiving word from the canyon that an accident in ad taken place. , On their arrival at the scene though, the injured man had been removed re-moved to the hospital. They conducted an investigation. ( Baker has been a resident of Salt Lake at intervals for the past twelve years. He was a native of Illinois and came here from there. No trace of relatives could be found by the police. |
