Kngland, February 27, LSoO. the son of John and Elizabeth Bird dishing, and was the seventh In a family of nine children, chil-dren, only one of whom survives, Mrs. Laura Gushing of this city. He emigrated to Utah in his twenties, twen-ties, finishing the journey from the end of the railroad by wagon. He located in Salt Lake, where he was employed as a salesman at the Z. C. M. I. and at Jennings & Sons. He became connected with the Emma Mining company of Alta. In ' the early '70s he went to the Pioneer ore sampling mill at Sandy, owned by the late Richard Rich-ard Mackintosh, succeeding F. W. Day as manager, and continued in charge of this business for many years. Mr. dishing was active in placing mineral min-eral exhibits at the "World's Columbian exposition at Chicago and at the Midwinter Mid-winter fair at San Francisco. He also made many gifts of mineral collections to the public schools. He was a member of the convention that framed the constitution of the state and in the Incorporation of Sandy city he wis an active participant. He was the first, mayor of Sandy to serve two terms. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. in England, continuing this activity ac-tivity here and receiving past grand honors. He married Ellen Cushing. daughter of the late James Cushing of this city, December 24, 1.869, and is survived by his widow and the following ch'ldren: Ernest and Arthur G. Cushing of Sandy. Mrs. James B. .Tenson of Salt Lake, and Albert J. Cushing of Helena. Mont. Funeral services will be held at the residence at Sandy, Monday at 2 p. m. Friends are invited to attend. |
