' i THE Ogden golfers will be given an opportunity to regain their lost laurels from the Salt Lake aggregation in another team match this forenoon at Ogden. Smarting Smart-ing from the sting of their defeat last Sunday on the Salt Lake links, the Ogdeuites intend to show a reversal of form in today 's match. It is expected that no fewer than twenty Salt Lake players will make the trip to the Junction Junc-tion City. An added feature of the day's play will be a specially arranged match between be-tween M. L. Dickey, the Salt Lake Country club professional, and Harry Webster, tho Ogden instructor. This affair promises to be almost as interesting inter-esting as the regular team match, and both teams are backing their local pros. Last Sunday's team match, in which the locals eanio out victoriously, was one of the best and most keenly contested con-tested affairs ever played between the two clubs. Although they were beaten by eight points, the Ogden mashie wielders put up a spirited fight, and the locals were forced to exert thom-sclves thom-sclves to accomplish their purpose. The visitors were probably handicapped because of the fact that they were playing on enemy territory, and tho Salt Lake players wili be laboring under un-der the same sort of conditions today. Match With Butte. It is hoped by local golf fans that more matches of this character can be arranged in the future. A match with the Butte golfers would arouse much interest. George von Elm, the youthful youth-ful state champion, has been playing on the Butte links during the last ten days, and it is possible he may be j able to arrange something in the way j of a team match between tho Salt Lake and Butte clubs. Local golfers appear to have hit their stride. In fact, they have been playing so well that a very decided cut in handicap strokes will be made at once. In spite of war activities, a number ; of interesting club tournaments have-been have-been arranged this season, and more members have participated in them than in previous years. This increased interest in the game only goes to show that the. real golfer, one who enjoys en-joys the pastime, can always find time for a round or so. W. V. Armstrong, Arm-strong, the Utah food administrator, is golf's latest victim, who, after taking tak-ing little or no interest in the sport for a number of years, has become a strong booster of the ancient sport, and intends to master its many mysteries by taking frequent lessons from the local lo-cal instructor. Eighteen.hole Course. Thornton Gilmer has been tho most consistent local player this year, having hav-ing taken both of this month's tour- ; ncj-s, one of them the June leg of tho directors' cup and the other a special monthly affair for a trophy put up by L. Y. Sowles. It is rumored that Salt Lake will bo able to boast an eighteen-holo golf course in the near future, which will aid materially in boosting the sport. A ij nine-hole course will also be laid ont J on the University of Utah campus J within a short time. M. L. Dickey will ? plan the architecture of the "U" links. |
