Show j R. W. L. Relief Disappointing ! By Rin8 W. Lardner. i Advice on Running Drives Chi. Dec. 2. To the ed. of tho S. L. Tribune: W'ell, Mr. ed., I come down to work this A.M.1 expecting that the R.W.L. drive was all over, but in the stead oi that it had just began and 1 got down to the office and they was as much mail there as President Wilson usually gets and I am not hired to read so much mail so I just said to myself 1 will read the most important of it today and leave the rest till tomorrow so 1 picked out the telegram first and it was from this actor, Jack Northworth, which was here a wile ago but now he is in Cleveland, so it said "I am sending you my contribution for your drive and all as I ask is that you i keep the sender's name a secret and when i you credit it just write down :This from anonymous Jack Northworth.' " . I Q O I looked at the yellow piece of pa- per that he sent along and it said : come over to La Salle and Jackson a.nd you will receive the money that somebody I has sent to you and (hat is all it said so I I went over there and they was no ex- ! press running from here to there s'o I j had to take a local that makes all stops ! and when I got over there I signed a lot of papers and the man gave me 1 $1.00 i dollar and I walked out with it. But listen, Mr. ed., do you know -hat ! it cost me to go over there and get the dollar and come back. Well, Mr. Ed., it cost me $2.40 and when 1 come back here was all this mail still waiting and further and more thjf'city editor said you must get your pic" u re taken with the Gimme Girls so I stood for that and had my picture laken. AND still all these envelopes had not been opened up but there are many days to follow and I don't know what is in all these envelopes but from the ones I have opened it looks like as if this drive would half- to continue for several vrs. and all as 1 have got to show I j H,,!,, for it so far is $2. and 61 cents and that don't count the money J. have spent getting it which amounts to more than what has been taken in and the next time I have & drive I will stay home and let the Gimme Girls run it and at leaj,l that won't cost me nothing but they can have their fun and pay for t it and I will have none of the worry but just lend them my name and they can have tha t for the ask ing. i3ut if you have ever an occasion to start e. drive, Mr. ed., you would better .see ;tho girls first or they will ruin you. ' Yours respy, R.W.L). |
