Show PROBE GAMBLING 118 CHINESE Stores . in Ogden Run by-Orientals by-Orientals Are Under Suspicion. Special to The Tribune. OGDEN", Nov. 21. That there ere seven Chinese stores in Ogden which are no tiling more than gambling houses for the Jananes and Chinese residents of the city, and that Japanese laborers have lost $70,000 In gambling since the liffct of the year, are rumors that tho Japanese-American Japanese-American society Is seeking to have investigated in-vestigated here with the aid of the state council of defense. A meeting was held late yesterday afternoon with members of the Japanese society, beaded by T. Uchkla, secietary. and ministers of the local ehnn-hes and a Dr. Murphy, acting for the state council. coun-cil. An investigation of the conditions in Ogden hns been made by Dr. Murphy and the members of the Japanese .society. .soci-ety. It is stated that ail the Chinese stores on Lincoln and Grant avenues have signs in their own language in the store windows 'announcing that gambling is carried on there. The, principal game is fantan. The Japanese are seeking to have the gambling stopped here, but, from Investigation Inves-tigation they found that the city ordinance ordi-nance Is merely a bit of camouflage. In that the Chinese proprietors can hide under the word "knowingly." They are aware of the fact, and, consequently, continue con-tinue the gambling. They gamble In their own country by paying a license to the government and do not object to paying pay-ing a fine to the 'city once ih a while when their places are raided here. The board of city commissioners will probably be asked to amend the ordinance describing gambling, and then an attempt will be made by agents of the state council coun-cil of defense to put a stop to the gambling. |
