Show p recufiiar I- Beliets Many and strange have been the thousands of "cures" for. the ills of the teeth during the dark ages and even in modern times among the uneducated. It remained for America to establish the science of modern dentistry as it is now practiced, and American dentists today lead the world in progressiveness. It' is no longer considered good form to pull a tooth when it can be saved. "For instance," says Oral Hygiene on this subject, "What could be more strange than the Rumanian cure for toothache?" It consists of boiling an ant or several ants together with the earth of its nest, and rinsing the mouth with t' e water. In Bernera it Is believed that the taking of the first nail that lias been used to nail down a coffin-lid, after the corpse has been placed in the coffin, will, if applied to an aching tooth, cure immediately the pain. In Derbyshire, England, it was once the custom when a tooth was pulled to put salt on it, throwing it into the fire. This process excused you from looking for that tooth on Judgment Day. A cure for toothache at one time very common In Herefordshire Hereford-shire consisted in the patients going at midnight and cutting a notch on the top rail of a gate for nine nights. ' But who wants to wait nine nights for the toothache to dis- appear? In parts of Yorkshire it was believed if you pulled a tooth out in the dark it would not hurt you. Try it! In Essex there was a legend, and it was practiced by cutting a little hair from the nape of the nock and mixing it in a ball of fat. You place this fat and hair ball on the doorstep, and the V first clog that comes by w;ll eat it. This was supposed to be a wonderful cure for teething babies, but it was hard on the dogs. All of these practices look silly to the people of today. But they are no more ridiculous than the way some moss-backs practice prac-tice today. The methods of twenty years ago will jio more suffice suf-fice now than the methods of a hundred years ago would suffice suf-fice twenty years ago. The dentist of today must be up on his toes every minute. Technic and methods are changing the world is advancing, and the dental profession must advance with it. The dentist of today MUST have a complete X-Ray equipment, or ho is a hundred years behind he is working in the dark. This office was the first in the country tlt.it we know of to install complete X-Kay department and. make X-Ray photographs photo-graphs free for patients.
