Show EGG-LAYING CONTEST ON AT POULTRY SHOW 400 Chicks Plume Feathers at Big Exhibition; Many Sales Reported. With 4 Mil entries, approximately TOO more than last year, and an excellent patronage, the annual show of the Utah Poultry association began on AY est Second Sec-ond South street yesterday. The exhibition exhibi-tion will continue the remainder of the week. G. CJ. Wherry of Payette, Idaho, who will act as judge, arrived at noon yesterday and began nis work. Some awards will be made today, but the judging will not lie finished until tomorrow, tomor-row, t'harlcs G. Plummet, president, and John .1. Newton, secretary -treasurer of the association, said yesterday. "With eggs at cents a dozen and every kind of food needed to win the war. interest is being taken in the exhibition exhibi-tion bv others than poultry fanciers. Most of the exhibits are of fowls of utilitarian util-itarian nature, and already a number of sales are reported. One of the tendencies ' noted at the show Is the interest taken hy boys and girls. Two ent rles were made by young boys, the llrst in the history his-tory of the association. These are black Cochin bantams by Clayton Uoundy of Provo and silver dark-wing hantams by Kugene Margetts. Members of the association asso-ciation have been endeavoring to interest t he youngsters in poultry raising as a meaiis of making spending money, and are gratified that their e.Toits are bearing bear-ing fruit. Talks of interest and the soluli-m of problems to poultry growers are features of Urn show. These talks are very informal in-formal and are made tn groups touring the pens. Points on judptng also are being be-ing made clear by Mr. Wherry. An ftgg-laying contest seemed to have been arranged among the hens yeslerdav. A large number of "eggs were presented owners of the hens, and the show rooms were in an uproar for some lime a I ter each egg was laid, most of the noise being be-ing made by the. roosters of the entire show, irrespective of the location of the coop of the producing hen.. |
