Show IFOBTY FARMERS OUT FDR HOOP PRACTICE Special to The Tribune. LOGAN, Dec. 17. Basketball at both the U. A. C. and B. Y. C. will get a whirlwind lest this weeK before the holidays, holi-days, both schools being eager to get the men in good playing form so that strenuous strenu-ous work can be resumed after the first of the year. Work so far has been coming along very well in t he opinion of the mentors and each schooi quint has played an opening game. Coach Joe Jenson of the Aggies has encountered some difficulty in accommodating accommo-dating the large number 01 men who reported re-ported when he first issued a call for candidates, but he thinks that he will be able to thin out the snuad so as to keep only an average of three teams on the floor each night. . Forty candidates donned the uniforms, which shows that the Farmers are interested inter-ested in the hoop paw time and also wish to help tho Aggies to another pennant this year. Jenson's aggregation won- their Initial contest from the business men's quint very easily. Jn this game the Aggies used a. number of men, in order to try them out. at the different positions, and the result seemed very satisfactory. Jenson thinks that he has the best candidate for a guard position that eveY played on the Aggie floor in Lyn Andrus, the former Provo star. Andrus plays a great de fensive game and can also ppeed up the others. Lolo Spencer, tho Salt Lake athlete. Is showing unusual form at forward for-ward and his playing is equally up to any standard net by a I'tah basketball man, .say the fans. Captain Russell Berm.-nn of the B. Y. C. HUti teaJu is going strong . for a forward ponition, toget her with Sumsion of Springvillc. Jenson's hardest task is lo develop a center, but he Vina two men of some exporleneo at the pivot position and they may prove to he valuable. valu-able. These are Niels Nielson, who played under Jenson at the "Y," and Clyde of Spiingvllle. Ixs Jarvis and Mosc Stiefel are both playing great games at guards and their high school experience should be of great help to them this ypar. Coach A. J. Knapp of the 13. Y. C. has a squad of new men throughout, but they are showing class and may yet show up in scholastic circles. The "Y" men won from the Almnnl all -stars Saturday night after a hard game. The Crimsons showed weaknoss at team work and "finished "fin-ished playing, but practice should remedy this. Captain Fuhriman and Hail are playing fast at forwards. These men fight hard and can score whenever they get a fighting fight-ing chance to make a counter. Jones and Mai ler are stationed at guards and a re both huskies, with lots of pep and fight. Thorpe is working at center, which position posi-tion was vacated by Cyril Hammond, who left school just as Coach Knnpp was ' rounding out a fast aggregation with Hammond as an important cog in his machine. ma-chine. Knapn has a large squad of others who are waiting lo be given a chance.. The B. Y. C. will play the Saints in Salt Lake Friday. They are trying to arrange other games In the capital while there with some of the high school teams. |
