Show MAY HAVE VALUABLE ENGINE OF WARFARE Enlisted Man Working on Huge Magnifying Magni-fying Glass Which Will Set Tire on Objects Far Removed. Special to The Tribune. POCATELLO. Idaho, Dec. 17. Tf ex- porirnems being made by A. C. Carlson, j an electrician of this city, shoull prove j successful, he will be able to offer the government an engine of destruction which will literally burn up the hordes of tile German army. j The idea upon which Carlson has been ! working is based on the well-known fact that a flre can readily be started as a result, of focusing the sun's rays throush an ordinary magnifying glass. It is proposed pro-posed to construct and mount on a suitable carriage a large device of this kind equipped with a series of powerful lenses. It is claimed that under proper conditions the rays from such a weapon could be thrown long distances like those from a mammoth searchlight, and that they would not only be deadly to human life, but would also set fire quickly to buildings upon which they were concentrated. concen-trated. Carlson has enlisted and hopes to have the opportunity of continuing his experiments experi-ments under the supervision of army engineers. |
