"Von have reason to he thankful to your counsel that you were not convicted of grand larceny instead of receiving stolen goods." said Judge Agee in passing pass-ing sentence in the Mathes case. "The evidence in this case, including your own, shows conclusively to my mind that you have been implicated in several burglaries bur-glaries and that you ought to be prosecuted prose-cuted for burglary of the LMngree, the Wright, the Jenkins and the Zuppann resident-en. " Vour own testimony shows that you were mixed up with a gang of thieves, hurglars and prostitutes, and the sheriff's office is to be commended for running down this gang. If we had a few men like Judge Ceorge S. Barker of the municipal mu-nicipal court in control of the police department de-partment of this city, to co-operate with the sheriff's office, such persons as you would find it advisable to move on to some other place." Privately Judge Agee has also expressed ex-pressed his commendation of Sheriff H. C. Peterson and his deputies in their active ac-tive campaign against bootleggers and persons bringing liquor into the city. A large majority of the arrests for such crimes since August 1 have been made by sheriff's deputies. |
