Xo lives were lost when the steamer St. Paul of the Streekfus line, carrying approximately ap-proximately 1700 persons, went aground last midnight in the Ohio river, three miles below here. The steamer was takiug her first excursion ex-cursion trip of the season to Henderson, Ky., and on its return trip was caught in a strong n;i!e. Other steamers were trying to pull the steamer free early today. EVANSVILLE, Ind., April 1. The steamer St. Paul of the Streekfus line, carrying approximately 1700 persons, was driven ashore on the Ohio river at midnight at a point three miles below this city in a strong wind. The steamer is giving out distress signals. Aid has been sent from here. The St. Paul was making her first excursion trip of the season from this city to Henderson, Ky., and return and was on her return trip when caught in a strong gale at the bend of the river just below this city. The steamers J. A. B. and JCcsbit left at 1 a. m. for the scene. The spot where the steamer was driven aground is a barren point and no telephone communication could be had with the scene. At 2 o'clock this morning lights of the steamer were discernible dis-cernible from Howell, a few miles below be-low here, but no definite word has been obtained from the vessel. |
