Contending that t he prevent amount ot producti o agvi-c agvi-c nit nra 1 laud iu Weber county can be doubled by proper drainage, tl'ie Weber county I arm bureau has undertaken a campaign ot cdueaiion whereby it hopes to bring the tarmers themselves and the citizen in general to a realization of the facts. This will be attempted by the use of letters sent to members of "the farmers' organization. The rirst letter reads as follows: The productive agricultural land in This county, a you probably know, consists of 4o.0JU acres. Are you aware that another 45,000 acres of rirst-class agricultural land ci-uld be added by removing the excess water by drainage? These land are not so impregnated impreg-nated with alkali or other minerals but that their productivity is certain cer-tain after thev are drained. A !ar.'e proper lion of the nra was at one time farmed, but by the abuse of irrigation the water table has been raised to the extent that field crops could not survive. A? a result those one time productive pro-ductive fields have been turned into pastures supporting a few dairy cows. Of this 4.".0b0 acres 14."00 lies in the Kov. Hooper and Kanesville districts: "27.0'.'O acres lies partly within the limits of Ogden. extend- I ing through West Weber, Marriott, Plain City. Slaterville to Warren; 3t0ii acres lies in the Pleasant View and North Os'len district, and 1000 acres in Ogden valley. Our present agricultural income euuld be doubled by bringing back the.e lands to their former productivity. pro-ductivity. The estimated cost of draining thee tracts based on the cost for the Hooper district, figured bv United States Drainage Engineer Engi-neer W. X. Hall, would be (i00,U0O. If theee lands were reclaimed and planted to sugar beets the increase in income to Weber county, figured on the present average yield and price, would be $3,612,5o0. which is approximately our present agricultural agricul-tural income. |
