Show GERMANS GAIN BIG VICTORY ON GALICIAN FRONT BERLIN'. Oct. 17, via London, 4:46 p. m. The Russians have suffered a heavy defeat in Galicia, the war office announced today. Repeated attacks were repulsed and trenches on a front of one and one-quarter miles were taken by the Austro-German forces. Nineteen hundred prisoners and ten machine gifns were captured. The statement reads: The enemy artillery fire which was directed against positions of the army under General Count von Bothmer was increased during the afternoon to the greatest intensity and lasted until un-til nightfall, only being' interrupted during .repeated storming attacks. All the' infantry attacks were repulsed, and the enemy suffered a heavy defeat. de-feat. The Guard fusilliers and Pomeranian Pom-eranian , grenadiers pursued the retreating re-treating enemy and took the foremost enemy trenches on a front of two kilometers (one and one-o.uarter miles) and brought in thirty officers and 1900 men as prisoners. They also captured ten machine guns. South of Dorna Watra (southern Carpathians) our troops won some heights east of the Negra stream. |
