Show TEUTONS Sill AT HUSK ON FAR-FLUNG LINE No Decisive Results Attained At-tained Yet; Plan Is to Divide Slavs From Rumanians. PETROGRAD, O.-t. 17, 32:4.5 p. m. (via London, Oct. IS, 1 -: 1 7 a. m.) The whole of General Brussilol'f 'a front, from the district of Kovel to Rumania, presents an almost continuous battle line, with larpje Russian and Aus-1 tro-German forces constantly engaged in attacks and counter-attacks, each aide successfully defending its position, hut making no lasting progress against its opponent. It bas become evident that the intention in-tention of breaking through the northern north-ern sector of General Hrusailoff'a line and rocapturing Lutsk has been supplemented, sup-plemented, since Rumania '9 entry into the war, by a more audacious plan a move at the extreme southern flank by the Austro-Germans, in the hope of separating the Russian armies from their now allien. Gain in Carpathians. To thia end the Austro-Gcrmans have concentrated heavy totces at. the southern south-ern tip nt" Bukowina, where the southern south-ern flank uf t lie Russians joins the northern, flank of the Rumaninns, and have begun an advance south of Donia-Watva, Donia-Watva, accompanying this with a vigorous vig-orous attack slightly farther north in the region of Korosmezo and Kirlibaba, a nd a parallel movement against the Jiumanians in Transylvanin. Thus far the dri ve of the Teutonic allies against the Rumanians has been more successful than that against the Russians, for, while the former are retiring re-tiring toward their own frontier, the Russians have not, as far as is known at present, been compelled to give way before the powerful offensive directed against them. Bigger Battles Near. ' The Austro-Germnn movement, however, how-ever, is stiil in its early stages and a tremendous struggle is expected on this part of the front. Already the .Russians .Rus-sians have begun counter-maneuvers, as is attested by the number of prisoners taken in the Kirlibaba region, where the first attack of the Austro-Uerniuns, in the view of military observers, bears little semblance of success. Fighting still continues southeast of A'ladimir- Volyuski, in Yolhynia and south of Brscezany, in Galicia.' At these two points, covering respectively the roads to 'V ladimir-V'olynski, and Leni-berg, Leni-berg, a continuous battle is being carried car-ried on at close range, leading often to bayonet encounters, but without producing pro-ducing any decisive results. |
