Show ALTA TUIEL WILL INCREASE FORCE In order that the Clements vein may be reached as soon as possible and that territory prospected during the summer months, the Alta Tunnel & Transportation Transporta-tion company, the property of which is located at the head of Silver Fork in the Big Cottonwood district, is preparing the long tunnel so that two shifts of drillers may be employed. Preparations are being made at the property so that the working force may be increased in the near future. 1 Due to the length of the tunnel the company has been confronted for the past few months with the problem of ventilation. After a round of holes had been drilled and blasted, it was found to be impracticable to put two shifts to work due to the gases at tho working face. To obviate this difficulty the company is now blasting out a ditch on the east side of the tunnel. This ditch will be two feet wide in the clear and eighteen inches in depth. Ties six feet in length will be. laid under the tracks in the tunnel and over these a ten-inch ventilation pipe will ho installed in order that the gases may bo drawn out of the tunnel by suction. The ditch 1 will be loOO foot in length when completed, as will be tho ventilation venti-lation pipe. The pipe will be connected witli a large suction fan that has been installed at the portal and that will be driven by' a five horsepower motor. Better ventilation will enable the company com-pany to put two shifts of miners with machine drills to work and three shifts of muckers. Mules will be employed to haul the muck from the breast. Tho Clements vein will be cut within the next 300 feet of driving at a depth of about 1100 feet from the surface. With the increased working force it is expected that this vein will be reached within the next forty-five days. There is about one cubic foot of water flowing from the portal of the tunnel each second at the present time. The flow of water has been increasing as the tunnel has been driven, and it is tho intention of the company to utilize this water later on for the development of power. |
