Show SOME POINTS III FAVOR OF NO DECISIONS Andrews Argues That Ten' round Bouts Are Too Short to Determine Superiority. CLABBY AND GIBBONS MEET AT MILWAUKEE t Battle Booked for January 21; Ritchie to Retire Unless Un-less He Can Get Go With Welsh. By T. S. ANDREWS. 1 Special to Tho Tribune. j MILWAUKEE, Wis., Dec. 26. A termincd effort is being made in eer- ! eral cities where big boxing matches aro held to bae tbe law changed whereby decisions will bo permitted by the referee, ref-eree, in -lead of the no-called iio-decision boute1, as at present. It is said that tbe boxinir game would profit thereby; that i ti threat would bo increased and that boxer.- would get their just dues. It may be true in a measure and might be the means of stimulating the boxers to greater efforts, especially where they arc meeting champions or near-champions. Thf-e remarks are drawn from r'-ent eur". inters between Charlie White and Willie Ritchie, White and Ereddv WeKu and Welsh and "Younjr'' Shugrue. It fo happened that in each of these contests the champion had the worst of tbe milling, and had a de-cision de-cision been given it would have been against tbe title holder. "That would have been great for tbe bozer meeting the champion aod win-oing win-oing the title in ten rounds, which is altogether too ehort to determine a. championship contest; nothing under twenty rounds should decide a title mutch. Then egain. had these contests gone tweutv round instead of ten. there might have bvn different results, too, for the champions might have corns along at their real ipeed as the bout progressed. jTen Rounds Too Short. Tt U not fair to a champion fo have ! a title pass away id a ten-round contest, i Two clever men" could go that distance I at top epeed and never nurt each other iu tho least. Twenty rounds are about the correct distance, and even twenty-five twenty-five would be better for a championship catch. However, there are other dangers dan-gers to the boxing pam? in this connection, con-nection, aud which the promoters and others should try to avoid. I have always been an advocate of decisions iu boxing contests of proper distance, or even in short bouts, but just now it seems that the real danger lies in permit-ting decisions in thee short-round affairs. The secret of the whole thing is that decisions are wanted to enable tbe betting fraternity to cam ble on the results of the matches. As matters now stand, the bettors must lay ( off or leave tbe decisions to newspaper sporting editors. Horse racing has been killed all ovrr tho country by betting abuse, and that is just what will bap-pen bap-pen to the boiing came if decisions are to be permitted in tbese short round affairs. Tbe boxing commissions in the states where the name is legalized wouM better think twice before foolinp with the buzz-saw; better leave tho law as it is. Ritchie to Retire. Willie Eitchie, who is still regarded 33 the lightweight champion of America, Amer-ica, intends soon to retire for all time from the roped arena and become a real business man in San Francisco. Willie is not particular whether he engages en-gages in more boxing matches or not; if he does there must be something worth while, otherwise be prefers to remain out of tbe ring and attend strictly to business. He has one ambition" am-bition" and that is to meet Freddie Welsh again and endeavor to win back tbe world's title of lightweight champion. cham-pion. He will make the same weight for Welsh that they fought at in London Lon-don 13o at 2 o'clock But aside from that he will not agree to make weight for any of them. His preference for matches is with Welsh, Charlie White, Joe Shugrue, Jimmy Duffy or Joe Mau-I Mau-I dot. Willie has taken up the hat business busi-ness with an old ' established iirru in San Francisco. In a letter to the writer Eitchie gives his plans for tbe future as follows: My Dear Andrews: Just a fovr lines on the boxing game.
