Show LOOSE WILL HEAD STAM1ITTEE Action Taken When Senator Sen-ator Smoot Cracks the Political Whip. ONE DISSENTING VOTE Harry Joseph Objects to the Selection of a "Hand-picked" "Hand-picked" Chairman. Colonel C. E. Loose of Provo was elected chairman of the Republican state committee com-mittee yesterday afternoon following the republican state convention. The new state committee met at the governor's office of-fice after the adjournment of the state convention. "Word having been received that Senator Reed Smoot insisted on the election of Colonel Ioose for state chairman, chair-man, the committee did his bidding. There w-is one dissenting voice raised In the committee. It was that of Harry P. Joseph, who was defeated on Monday for the nomination for congress from this district, but elected yesterday a member of the state committee from Salt Lake county. When Colonel Loose was proposed pro-posed for state chairman at yesterday's committee meeting- Harry Joseph objected. ob-jected. He declared that the state committee com-mittee must carry the burden of hand-picked hand-picked candidates, but that he did not Relieve it necessary to have a hand-picked chairman. Mr. Joseph wanted to know why State Chairman Henrv Gardner was not at the meeting, and he wanted to know further whether or not anyone had any information informa-tion as to whether or not Mr. Gardner wished to succeed himself. He was ruled out of order. Nominates Eldredge. At vesterday's meeting E. C. Ash ton of Havis county acted as temporary chairman chair-man and H. L. Curamins as secretary. After Loose had been nominated for state cha irman Mr. Joseph nominated J. U. Kidredee. Jr., of Ogden. formerly county chairman for Salt Lake county. Mr. Joseph called attention to the fact that the principal fiplit in the campaign would be waaed in Salt Lake county and that Mr. Eldredge was in an excellent position to direct the campaign with particular par-ticular reference to this county. Colonel Loose was elected chairman by a vote of 2?. to 3. Mr. Joseph casting the only vote for his favorite. The state committee decided to levy an initial assessment on all candidates of 10 jer cent of one year's salary. Under this decision the initial expense of the cam-paiErn cam-paiErn will be S.5r. each to Smoot. Leather. Leath-er. voo.i and Howell. $500 to Judge Mccarty Mc-carty and f-Mii to A. C. Matheson. Sub-s-?.i;ent assessments will probably be levied on Smoot and liie congressional candida;:s. Assessments Delinquent. It was discovered that some of the nominees for office had not yet paid their j assessment of tz each, their apportion-mtnt apportion-mtnt of the expense of conducting the ! convention. The state committee decided to take steps to collect this amount at once. A committee composed of E. C. Ashton, H. L. Cumnr.ngs. Harry 8. Joseph and John M.
