The city of Butte and Silver Bow comity were placed under martial !j law in a proclamation issued here late today by Governor Stewart. In his proclamation the governor u stated that conditions of lawlessness lawless-ness at Butte and the inability of civil authorities there to cope with the situation were so apparent as to necessitate this course. ic C BUTTE, Mont,, Sept. 1. The federal troops are scheduled to arrive at Helena about daylight tomorrow tomor-row and will proceed to Fort Harrison, there to await further developments in Butte iu connection with the renewal of factional troubles among the miners. "Muckie" MacDonald, president of the Butte Mine Workers' union, addressing ad-dressing a crowd of several hundred miners today on a street corner in the heart of the city, declared that any man that came after him with a warrant war-rant would be shot. "I understand that a warrant was issued for my arrest several days ago," he said, "but the officers were afraid to serve it. They were afraid because they knew I would kill any man that came, and I will die before I submit to arrest. If they get me in the jail some night I would be run out in an automobile, auto-mobile, and that would be the last of "Muckie" MacDonald." |
