Show HOME RULE FIGHT. The controversy over home rule has broken out afresh in the British parliament. parlia-ment. Premier Asquith has given notice no-tice that the Irish bill and the Welsh disestablishment measure will be taken up and pressed to a conclusion when parliament reassembles September 0. The Unionists make dire predictions should the government follow- the course marked out. We do not see any good reason why the two bills mentioned men-tioned should not be put through now that they have reached tne last stages. The fact that a war has broken out cuts no figure, for even if the Unionists now at the front were in London Lon-don they could not defeat either home rule or Welsh disestablishment. So why delay matters? The rank and file of the Nationalists and Covenanters now fighting their country 'b battles on the continent are better employed than they would )'e cutting each other's throats at home. If the politicians would let them alone the Catholics of the south and the Orangemen of the north would fraternize frat-ernize at home as well as on the battlefield. .Whether they come from Dublin or Belfast, from Cork or Londonderry, Lon-donderry, they are all Irishmen, and should havo their country 's welfare at heart. If any of the parliamentary leaders are' spoiling for a fight let them join the army in France along with the ordinary classes whom they have been trying to embroil iu civil war. If they i should happen to survive and return home they would never attempt to start a fratricidal struggle in Ireland over home rule. |
