Show HEALTHY MOTHERS OF IMPORTANCE IN SOCIALPROGRAM Vital statistics in births, stillbirths, still-births, infant and maternal deaths for the month of September, 1941, for Utah and Salt Lake county are as follows: Utah S.L.C. Live Births 1070 Yli Still Births - 31 2 Infant Deaths 32 2 Maternal Deaths 5 0 At the present time we are hearing a great deal about the number of young men unfit for military service by reason of physical phy-sical defects. Certainly, this is a very real cause for concern, and merits active consideration. Dr. Lela J. Beebe, director of the division di-vision of maternal and child health for the state department of health states: "We should be quite as much concerned about the fitness of our young women for their duties. The bearing and rearing of healthy and well-trained children is certainly, in the long run, a more necessary and fundamental social need than the bearing of arms. Even the rearing rear-ing of healthy young men for military service is dependent on the safe guarding of childbeat-i ing. Then, too, our next line of defense in proper child raising, is largely "manned" by women our public school teachers. We need to insure a supply of women wom-en who are physicaly and e-motionally e-motionally sound, as well as technically trained for this highly high-ly important task which so greatly great-ly affects the lives of boys and girls alike. Also, we must consider con-sider the first line of defense in our public health field the public pub-lic health nurse again, a body of women who are making great contributions to the public welfare, wel-fare, especially of mothers and children." Data from the National Health Survey indicates that the all illness ill-ness rate for women (15 to 64 yrs.) is nearly double that of men. Should we not make certain cer-tain that any efforts made to improve the health of men will be equally applied to women? |
