Show PRIDE OF MEXICANS SUFFERS GREAT BLOW EL PASO, April 21. The businesslike business-like expedition with which the Americans took Vera Cruz, the gateway to the capital capi-tal of their country, was a severe blow to the pride of the Mexicans in this city, their dejection showing plainly in their faces. In the offices of the rebel Junta, officials offi-cials declined to accept the official statement state-ment from Washington that tho big Mexican seaport had been evacuated, until bulletin after bulletin finally drove-tho drove-tho truth home. Two hundred Mexican-Americans who organised a military company hero a year ago met tonight and voted to offer their services to tho city in case of nocd, and to tho national government In case of war with Mexico. J. A. Escajeda, clerk of the district court, is at the head of the organization. He declared that Mexican-Americans were as loyal to the Stars and Stripes as any other citizens. There was no disorder dis-order in the city, but the Moxlcan district dis-trict will bo patrolled again tonight by soldiers. |
