Show UTAH CONFIDENT OF ViCTORY AT PRDVD Dual Track Meet With B. Y. U., Jf-iowever, May Bring Out Surprise. BY COACH FRED BENNION. Tho prollmlnnry meets at IJrovo luive slied no lights on the strength of the athletes down there, so I do not know how utronjr thoy are. They have .1 new team, though, and I think we enn win from them. Our boys were not. In the best of shape when they mot the Ask Ics a week ago, bvit-desplie bvit-desplie tho bad weather during the week I think they are In line shape and that thoy will take tho meet. The B. Y. U. will be strong in tho hurdles, the distances and the Jumps, where they have veteran athlcte!,uul Coach Roberts can be counted on to have a lot of youngsters who will be stiong. BY COACH E. J. ROBERTS. AVo liavo a number of youngsters who have been work-Ins hard all spring and who have boon whipped Into a w.ll-rounded team. U'e have no record breaker?, hut expect to make a better showing than did the Aggies against tho university. We recognize the great material that the varsity has and realize that our chance to win tho meet Is decidedly decid-edly slim. However, tho fellows are spirited and will be in line to spring a number of surprises. Hales Is In great shapo this year and will probably take llrst Mlace In the mile and tho half-mile runs. The University of Utah and the B. Y. U. will meet In a dual track and field meet this afternoon In Provo. It will ho the llrst time the Utah county athletes ath-letes have been In Intcrcollcglato competition compe-tition tills spring, hut they have a great number of young men whom they expect to Hhuw surprising strength. Tho unexpected strength of tho varsity hoys shown iu the meet with the Apples last week has put the Provo men on their mettle. According to n member of the B. Y. U. faculty, who has been following the work of the athletes, the Provoltcs are not overconlldent of winning. They believe that they have only a lighting chance to win, but since their victory over the crimson baseball learn, as the result of a ninth-Inning rally, they are ready to do their best and take tho 'hance, even though It Is slim. Sprinters in Shape. It has never been the pjooj fortune of tho B. Y. U. to have a sprinter who could win consistently. Out of the ten years that the Intercollegiate track meets have been of any Importance, tho B. Y. U. has won but one sprint event, and that was when Baird Jumped the gun in tho state meet in Logan two years ago. This year, howover. the southerners de-claro de-claro they have found the man who will count for them consistently In the ehort distances. The man is Cooper, a young fellow who camo up to the B. Y. U. from the Fillmore high school this sprin?. Wa performances Indicate that he Is fast, nnd his supporters are even backing him to take the 100-yard dash from Haymond. Tho B. Y. U. js also strong In tho hurdles, hur-dles, and will be conceded two places in the high hurdles and perhaps llrst place in the low hurdles. Daniels. Simmons and Jenkins are veterans at this game and unless tho past week has done miracles mir-acles for the east benchers the B. V. U boys should take both events easily. I Distance Runs in Doubt. A great fight Is expected In the distances dis-tances between Hales, the B. Y. U. runner, run-ner, and Wilson and Parkinson of the varsity Hales was able to stick dangerously dan-gerously close to Cole unjd Jamison, the great varsity team last year, and Is now in splendid shape. JJe did tho mile last year faster than It has been dune in the state this year and with a month's train- 1 ing to go on should be hard to head. J In tho polo vault tho B. Y. U. expects ex-pects to win with Freckloton. Freckleton has done better tjian eleven feet consistently con-sistently in the practice this year and If ho can do It today It Is pretty certain that he will win the cvcntt as Van Pelt, the varsity vaultor. lias never vet been nble to do eloven feet but on.
