W , McCreery, for the Ducks, and Knapp, for tho Sea Gulls, pitched creat ball. Numerically the hits wore even at six each. Both had control and few passes were issued. The muddy condition of the outfield contributed lartrely to Butte '9 undoing. ' On a dry field Hester's fly, -which brought in two of Salt Lake's runs, j would probably have been caught. But "ifs" don't win ball games, and scl- dom lose them, so all tall; about what might have been is idle and cats up The breaks of Hie luck were just 1 about even, one of Butto 's errors m'eau- ing a run and Salt La lie's only "error Crowd Enjoys Game. j t was such a game as tho spectators j en.jov. Except for an occasional error the fielding ns perfect and fast and 1 snappy. It is still too cold to get ifp I much enthusiasm, but the "May thaw is ; approaching and ))rcscntly the grand stand will bo giving vent to its old- time lustiness. Three double plays wore included in the doings, in two of which Art Mc- L'laiu played the prominent part, and in the other McCreery was the star. Knapp certainly had tho Indian label on tho Ducks in the first six innings. Only nineteen meu faced him in those sessions, tho extra one being accounted for by a base on balls. Butte's Scores. Tn the seventh Butto got. their two runs. Marshall started off with a single, which was followed with another- by ; Smith. Kossback thon sent out a two- bagger and Marshall came tearing J home. Half way down tho stretch ' Cliff bethought himself that ho hndVt touched third in his haste. Ho beat it back to porform that important oraco and hurried home again. Meantimo the ball had been relayed to Potta, who attempted to head off Marshall at the plate. But the throw was wild and both Marshall and Smith were safe. A moment later Hossback was M touched out by Caldwell, who had care- fully concealed the ball about his por- son, having in mind a great scheme of what he would do when Tlossback J stepped off the bag. Tho uraps. had 3 his eye on the play and "ttoss" went off verv much disgusted with tho way fate had treated him. How Sea Gulls Counted. H Hester 'f men got two across in the third. Knapp and Potts got .on with singles and advanced on a wild pitch. Heater hit a fly ball to right and Ross-back Ross-back failed to reach it. Knapp and Potts came homo, and Hester was caught off first in the act of nending for second on the expected throw to tho Salt Lake's two other scores came n the seventh in almost an identical way. Knapp got a base on balls and went to third on Potts 's double. A wild throw i bv Pendleton to the plate left Knapp in safety, and Potts scored when Mar-shall Mar-shall missed Hester's fly to center field. Marshall made a good run for tho Qy and was under it, but evidently was not firmly planted in tho mud, for the ball bounded out of his hands. The teams play again at 3:30 o'clock today.
