UPTON SINCLAIR IS GIVEN HIS FREEDOM New York Police Break Up May-day Demonstration of Socialists, Anarchists and Other Agitators, NEW YORK, May 1. May day demonstrations dem-onstrations by Socialists, Industrial Workers of the World, anarchists and anti-Rockefeller agitators kept tho police po-lice aclivo in several parts of the city today. A crowd of more than 10,000 persons poured into Union square lato in the da after Socialist parades in tho strcot. The crowds became unruly and the police formed flying wedges and cleared the square. Several persons were injured. The "Free Silence" movement of protest against what its sponsors designate desig-nate as .John D. Rockefellor, Jr.'s policy pol-icy in the Colorado mine controversy, was continued throughout, tho day in front of Mr. Rockefeller's offices at 26 Broadway. Upton Sinclair, author, head of tho movemont, was released from the Tombs after payment of tho fine imposed im-posed when bo wns arraigned for doing do-ing picket duty. Sinclair to Appeal. Weak from lack of nourishment because be-cause of his hungor strike, Sinclair went to the district attorney's office to prepare pre-pare an appeal from his conviction and then resumed his place among the crcpe-slocved crcpe-slocved followers at. 2G Broadway.
