Show OGDEI HOLDUP IS SENTENCED TO JAIL E. L. Craft, Confessed Highway High-way Robber, Pleads Guilty in District Court. Special to The Tribuno. OGDEN". Feb. 10. Tho first conviction for the series of holdups which recently terrorized the citizens of Ogdcn occurred In Judge X. J. Harris's division of the district court today, when John Durant, accomplice of E. L. CraTt, pleaded guilty to tho charge of highway robbery, waived the statutory time for receiving sentenco and was Immediately sentenced to an indeterminate in-determinate torni ln the state prison. Although Craft confessed to a numbor of holdups Implicating himself and Du-tiMil, Du-tiMil, the latter was charged with only one offense, the robbery of Walter J. iloyt. assistant city auditor, on the night of January 24. 101-1. Armed with revolvers. revol-vers. Durant and Craft held up Hoyt on on Twenty-eighth street, robbing him of a valuable watch and other articles. No charge has yet -been filed against Craft, hut District Attorney John C. Davis will recommend leniency in his case for the Information which he gave to tho officers following his arrost In Biigham City. Both of the criminals are rogaided by the authorities as desperate men. and but for tho action of Craft. Marshal Joseph Lillywhlte of tirlgham City probably I would have been murdered by Durant at the tlmo of the capture. According to the local officers, the Brlqharn officer ! searched both men twice without finding tho revolvers with which each was armed or a belt of cartridges worn by Craft. While the Boxelder county officers wore searching for tho men who attempted to hold up a blacksmith in Brighain City a week ago. Marshal Mllywhito happened upon Craft and Durant on the morning following tho crime Eulllng to find any weapons on them, he released them, and later It was. decided to take them into custody. Tho two men were attempting to make their escape from the city when they were located by Marshal Lillywhlte along the Oregon Short Line railroad tracks at tho edgo of town. The officer, after placing his own revolver re-volver iu the hands .of a boy who was with him, handcuffed Craft and Durant togother and again searched them, without with-out finding the revolvors. The two dos- peradoos seated themselves on tho railroad rail-road rail while tho officer went a short distance up the track to talk to a third man. According to Craft's confession, Durant reached Inside his shirt with his free hand and drew his revolver, with the intention of shooting tho officer, Drawing his own revolver, Craft pressed tho weapon against Durant and declared that If he shot the officer he would kill his companion and then shoot himself. They then decided to conceal their weapons, weap-ons, which were found by the officers along tho railroad track following Craft's confession. The cartridge belt worn by Craft was not disposed of until after they had been locked In the Brlgham City JalL Tho cartridges were thrown ln tho toilet and the belt was burned. Marshal Lilly-white, Lilly-white, who was In the city today, was assured as-sured by both Durant and Craft that thoy had revolvers Inside their shirts when the officer searched them. The confession by Craft was obtained by Deputy Sheriff John'Zundell of Box-elder Box-elder county. Deputy Sheriff J. L. Hobson of Weber county and Detective Thomas Burk of the Ogdcn police department. |
