Show GOOD ROADS BILL PASSED BY HOUSE Measure Proposing Federal Aid in Building Highways Is Passed to Senate. WASHINGTON, Feb. 10. -The Shackleford bill, under which tho government gov-ernment would distribute 25,000,000 tor good roads among the states, conditioned con-ditioned upon a dollar for dollar appropriation appro-priation by each state, was passed by the house today by a vote of 282 to 42 It now awaits action by the senate. Jts passage followed several days of do-bate, do-bate, during which moat of tho hundred and moro speakers advocated the project in the interest of tho farmers, while- a minority attacked the project as a dangerous opening wedge for heavy future inroads on the treasury. Democratic Loader Underwood, Republican Re-publican Loader Mann and Representative Representa-tive ITincbangh of Illinois, the ranking Progressive in tho city, all voted for tho measure. Representative Mann said that the cities could well afford from their wealth to contribute taxes to aid tho country in construction of roads and other improvements. Many of fhoso who voted against tho bill explained that their- opposition was not to federal aid in constructing the highways, but to tho method proposed iu the- pending measure. |
