John Duncan Kendall, mining operator oper-ator of renown throughout the west and especially in the interruountaiii region,' diiod here yesterday morning from an: attack of apoplexy at his residence, ! CM Hast South Templo street. j Mr. Kendall was born in northern j Illinois March 2S, IS-10, and was married mar-ried to Carrie Young iu September, ISOt). Ju his early manhood lie wu3 j engaged in business in Chicago, com-1 ing west in 1SS0. Mis first mining was done in Colorado. New Mexico and An-zoua, An-zoua, from which region he came lo Utah in 1884. Here lie became general superintendent of the Centennial-Eure-ka mine, .sinking the first shaft (now the main opening in the workings) and striking the tirst paying ore bodj in that mine. Under his management ihe Ccntennial-Enreka naid .?2.100.000 in dividends. When Mr. Kendall retired from the geucral superintendency lie was succeoded by Henry ("Hank'') Smith and later liy C 107 Allen. During fourteen years past Mr. Ken dall has been out of active business.. His earlier activities, however, caused i him to bo well known and highly re- j spected among mining men of this re-1 gion. Ho was a patron of legitimate' sports, having been one of the organizers organ-izers of the Boar River duck club, which includes in its membership many wealthy and otherwise distinguished residents of other cities iu the United States. There are no surviving near relative? of Mr. Kendall, his sister, Mrs. W. W. Chisholm, having died in Los Angeles March 30, 1913. He is the last of his family with the exception of tirst and second cousins residing in Illinois and California. There are a stepdaughter and a stopgrunddaughtcr, Mrs. M . S. Robinson and. Miss Helen Robinson, living liv-ing at Rockford, Til. Funeral arrangements have not j-et been announced, but it is thought probable prob-able that the services will be held tomorrow to-morrow or Thursday afternoon from the residence, 644 East South Temple street, with the Rev. Elmer 1. Goshen in charge. |
