A jury in tho federal court in Kansas City, Kan.. late today returned a verdict in tho libel suit nf Mrs. Carrie 15. Copo of Topeka, granting her damages in the avnoftnt of ouo dollar agaiust Bishop David JI. Moore of Cincinnati, but deciding de-ciding sho was entitled to no damages from Mr.. Goorgo O. TJobinson of JDe-trait JDe-trait , Mich., sued jointly with Bishop M oore. Mrs. Cope sued for $50,000. The alleged al-leged ibcl grow out of a famous Kausas church controversy. Mrs. Fannie Murray Mur-ray of Atchison county, JCan., diod in 1U'07? leaving $10,000 to Kunsas home missions. Two societies, both Methodists, Metho-dists, claimed the fund. Mts. Cope obtained ob-tained part of it. The othor society sued her. Then the bishops of the church stepped in and mado an effort to settle the dispute, BiBhop Moore was appointed, by tho conference to investigate. in-vestigate. JIo wrote to Mrs. Robinson and told hor the national eociotv ought to join and sustain the suits brought to obtain tho monoy. "If you don't," he wrote, "T don:t believe you will ever see a cont of it again.'' It was- this particular sentence that caused Mrs. Copo to bring suitx Mrs. Robinson sent copies of tho bishop's lettor to other national officers of tho missionary socioty and Mrs. Copo thereupon there-upon sued Mjs. Robinson on the grounds that, sho had circulated the bishop's lettor. Both Bishop M.ooro and Mrs. Robinson Robin-son sot up that thoro was no malico in their actions toward Mrs. Cope. |
