Show MANGANESE STEEL HAS BEEN TRIED AND PROVED The I'tah Society of Engineers held Its regular monthly meeting at tho office of-fice In the NewhoiiKe building Friday evening. A paper was read heiore the society by Frank E.' Johnson, local representative rep-resentative of the Edgar Allen American Manganese Steel company, on the subject sub-ject of manganese steel. Mr. Johnson gave a brief history of manganese steel, Kb properties and ueos, and alio Its limitations. Reports show that It will wear a great deal longer than the best qualities of cast chilled cast Iron. The manganese castings now made are loo hard to bo worked on tho lathe and hence manganese steel cannot be used except for comparatively large castingsi Following the paper by Mr. Johnson. J. II. Tempest, Jr., assistant engineer of the Utah Light fe Railway company, led a discussion of the subject, stating that the results obtained from manganeso steel In this city have been satisfactory. In order that all the members -of- the eoclcty might gel the full benefit out of the discussion on the International smelter, which was given last month, an excursion to the smelter was planned to" take pluce next Saturday. |
