The guards, by means of red lights, signaled the fishermen, and they were able to escape. The wardens lay on the ground until after 2 o'clock, when they faw a mau in tho distance, who apparently appar-ently was watching for someone. 3fe could be seen in the moonlight very clearly. They passed within a hundred yards of tho guard and finally reached tho stream, with their knees and hands bleeding from the crawling over the grass and brush. Wait for Fishermen. When they stopped there was a sand .bar between thcni and the river, and tfioy figured the fishermen would appear at that point during the night some time. After a wait of somo little time they heard the splash of oars in the water and saw the waves from a boat, and in a few minutes a boat pulled up, a seine was drawn in by two men and a large number of fish were dumped into the bottom of the boat. Having all tho evidence ncecssary, the wardens war-dens suddenly jumped up and ordered l he fishermen to throw up their hands. ' They were too quick, however, and both leaped into the brush and started on the run across country through a thicket. Tn attempting to follow them Warden Stoker caught, tho knee of his boot on a piece of barbed wire and fell head foremost into tho stream, disappearing dis-appearing under tho water. His boot was torn off. Hampered in that accident, acci-dent, the wardens were unable to catch the fishermen, but they had seen their faces in the moonlight and knew who they were. Jn the boat was found a complete seining outfit and thirty-five pounds of fish. These wero taken as evidence, and the fishermen were ar-rested ar-rested at Uuntsvillc Friday. Commissioner Chambers says he considers con-siders the catch one of tho most important im-portant in a long time, and savs ho is more than pleased with tho work of his deputies. He says ho will make every pflort lo havo the men sent to jail, instead in-stead of being allowed to pay a fine. |
