Show THE SHAD PIRATES NABBED the defendants on trial before justice brown this afternoon from fridays DAILY our wideawake wid sheriff T fowler and tish john A brown have caught on to the racket and made a haul today to day some few of the shad pirates being brought in today to day from lake shore they were promptly brought before justice W H brown and as we go to press the trial is proceeding the men brought in are ed coper A hanson august peterson and fred peterson all four were arraigned ed leper pleading guilty the others not guilty the first one tried was fred peter eon commissioner john A brown was the first witness I 1 know defendant I 1 have seen him in spanish fork the first time I 1 ever saw him was about five miles west of benjamin I 1 do not know eliat lie has anything to do with the case the case against mr peterson was then dismissed for lack of evidence fred stated to the court that his son was crazy and asked that he be dismissed august petersen was questioned by mr king I 1 get crazy sometimes I 1 dont know what I 1 do when I 1 am crazy I 1 get dizzy in my head sometimes I 1 lay down and sometimes I 1 stand up his father fred petersen testified that the boy was crazy and gave evidence of the fact august I 1 sometimes get dizzy in the head I 1 know it is wrong to steal commissioner brown testified teti fied in this case I 1 have seen defendant fishing in utah lake I 1 went there to see if aliey were running gil nets I 1 saw mr leper and Mr Hansen ther eIsaw two gilinets gil nets thoy were fastened at each end with a rock with floats at side to keep the net up the prosecution produced a gelnet in evidence A seine has larger twine than gelnet one man with a gelnet will destroy more fish than all the seines in utah lake you can make a trap of it yon can stretch it where you cannot stretch a seine gilinets are set stationary seines are drawn through the water mr august brown was the next witness his testimony was substantially the same as that of the proceeding witness the defendant then testified I 1 have not used gilinets gil nets I 1 worked for mr leper those nets were not mine it was not my baat we eat some of the fish he paid me money the other night I 1 worked for him one day he paid me 4 bits they use my boat all the time my father sold the gilinets to mr leper before he ever used the gilinets gil nets I 1 have helped him at other times I 1 have never used gilinets gil nets I 1 have used a geine we catch more fish with a seine than a net the hansen case was then called the defendant pleaded not guilty the first witness called was commissioner brown alio was testifying as we went to press |
