Show ROBERTS'S INFIRM JUDGMENT . In reply to a statement issued by the Salt Lake Ministerial Association, Elder Brigham H. Roberts mndo two addresses in tho Mormon tabernacle, Juno 9, 1907, a report of which appeared in the Des-eret Des-eret Nows of tho loth of that month. Among other things said by Mr. Roberts Rob-erts was the following: I sny that Joseph F. Smith's position needs only to be stntod to the world, and the manhood of Amorlca will applaud his attitude, long-haired ministerial associations associa-tions .a?- short-haired women's organizations. organiza-tions. ,o the contrary notwithstanding. So that, in the opinion of Elder Roberts,, Rob-erts,, "the manhood of America will applaud" deliberate lawbroaking; defiance de-fiance of the command of God; tho begetting be-getting of illegitimate children by the dozen; reservation of tho right to obey or to disobey God at pleasure; collection collec-tion of fuuds ostensibly for religious purposes and expenditure of the same in projects ranging from the corruption of politics aud politicians to harboring and protecting criminals. . Of course, if ' Elder Roberts had not continuously held himself up beforo tho youth of Zion as being their Moses to lead them out of the wilderness of ecclesiastical, political and moral wrong, his utterance herein reproduced might be looked upon as that of an irresponsible irrespon-sible fanatic. As it is, he has simply shown himself to be a willful and shocking shock-ing misrepreseuter of facts and public opinion. Onco the country has shown whut it thought of tho polygamous Roberts Rob-erts in an eminent!' practical manner it kicked Trim out, collar and breeches, from , a place that no such lawbreaker as he should havo sought to occupy. The infirmity of his judgment on public questions is shown further in the fact that he assumed that ho was elected on tho silver issuo; but when ho got to Washington ho quickly found that silver had nothing whatever to do with his case. While the Utah voters "bus tained" his polygamy, tho Houso of Representatives jumped on it so hard that he was jarred loose the first vibration. |
