Nov. 20. following a lengthy conference at, the White house today, it was announced .tonight (hat. the administration will exert, all its influence toward securing a comprehensive compre-hensive revision of the interstate commerce com-merce law by the incomintr congress. A rough draft of the proposcu amendments amend-ments to the law was submitted by Attorney At-torney Ceneral Wiekersham. The president had as his advisers (he attorney general, Commissioner Lane of the interstate eommerce commission and Senators JiJltins and Cummins. Frank . Kellogg, special "trust buster," of the department of justice, and Secretaries Secre-taries -Wilson and Dickinson also gave their views. While I he president has not yet made his selection of the men in con crest who will be entrusted with the task of putting put-ting tho legislation through, there aro said to be a large number of candidates anxious for the honor of appearing us champions of the White- house. John Mitchell, second vice president, James O'Connoll. third vico preoidont, aud Prank Morrison, secrotniy of thu federation, accompanied Mr. Goinpcrs to the white house. Prosideut Gompers submitted a number num-ber of matters. Foremost wus 0110 concerning con-cerning the issuance of injunctions by federal judges particularly as ihoy up-ply up-ply to personal liberty and their use in the settlement of disputes between employers and employees. Tho exemption exemp-tion of labor organizations from certain provisions of the Sherman anti-trust act was discussed. Tho president has practically decided that his message to congress will make no detailed recommendations regarding the Sherman act. His decision, which is largely based on the fact that there are ponding in the supreme court and on their way to that tribunal a number of important eases involving interpretation interpre-tation of tho act. He feels, it is said, specific recommendations at this time might be construed as au attempt to influence tho court. Amendment to the eight-hour law so as to extend its provisions to contractors contrac-tors und sub-contractors for government work and requiring an appropriation to pay- inspectors for duty in enforcing the. child labor law in the district of Columbia Co-lumbia were other subjects taken up at tho conference. |
