Show POLITICAL SITUATION BY JUDGE OGDEX IIILES In the issue of tho New York World of November 21 appeared a communication communi-cation from .ludgo Ogden Hilcs of this city, under the bonding, "Decline of Democratic Spirit." The article follows: fol-lows: To the Editor of the World: Tho paramount cause of the -election of Mr. Tuft Is tho decline of the democratle spirit among tho people and the great growth and prevalence of a degraded epicureanism epi-cureanism ummig all classes, rich and poor alike. The late President Ganleld well observed that "tho principles of Hamilton are waxing and the principles of Jefferson are waning." President Mc-Klriley Mc-Klriley said "politics Is business." by which he meant that government must be conducted for the beneilt of those syndicated syn-dicated business Interests which control tho policies of the Republican party. The general policy Is that It is tho business busi-ness of government to tako care of the rich and tho rich will take care of tin-poor, tin-poor, and that although this policy may continually tend to rcduee tho poor to a sort of feudal Industrial vnsualage, It Is still better than an oppositu democratic policy which Is supposed to continually lend toward anarchy. Kear and con option are therefore the potential instrumentalities of Taft's ascendancy as-cendancy fear lest a change, in tho government gov-ernment may blight a present or existing prosperity, or cause already hard business conditions to be still harder or more en-durlng: en-durlng: corruptions of our publte life to maintain a high protective tariff, and to maintain those Innumerable private monopolies mo-nopolies which tho protective tariff system sys-tem was erected to promote. Against these corrupt conditions the struggles of the Democracy are futile. For Democrats to rail at conservative Democrats Hko Judge Parker or Mr. 01-ney 01-ney or radical Democrats like Mr. Brvan or any other Democratic leader Is at once Illogical, Irrational and ungracious. The fault Is In the corruption of the people. OGDEN IIILES. Salt Lake City. Nov. IS. |
