Show Amussen Jewelry Store Robbed oi' Jewelry Aggregating in Value $500. POLICE BELIEVE BOYS PERPETRATED THE THEFT Entrance to the Store Made Through an Unguarded Excavation Ex-cavation in Rear. Crawling through an unguarded excavation ex-cavation at' the rear, burglars gained entrance to the Amussen .jewelry store at 70 South Main street Sunday, and stole jewelry aggregating almost $500 in value. They' curried away a tray containing wedding rings valued at $400 and a tra' of watch chaius valued at $S4. The theft was discovered by the pro--prietor, E. F. Asmusseu, about 9 o'clock Sunday night. There is no clew to the thieves, but they are believed to have been unprofessional.1; and youths who have been seen prowling .about the store. I'reiiaratorv- to razing the building occupied bv'the jewelry store, which is under contract to vacate by Thursday, Thurs-day, workmon, Saturday, tore out the southwest corner, leaving a hole large enough to admit a man's body. Through this the thieves crawled, gaining entrance en-trance to a large rear room. They then were confronted only by a thin door and were aided in getting through this by the lathing and plastering . being removed from oue side. Through the opening they put their hands and removed re-moved the prop thnt secured the door from the inside, admitting ihcm to the storehouse of precious jewels. Pass Up Diamonds ' Passing by thousands of dollars -worth of diamonds the thieves went to the front showcase on the north side and, selecting a fray of plain gold -wedding rings, fourteen carats each in weight, and another of watch chains, Twenty-one Twenty-one in number, carried them away, l.n-ftcad l.n-ftcad of making their escape by the excavation ex-cavation they unbarred the door in the center of tho rearmost room. That the thieves ' were, not pro Cos -fdouals is evinced by their nol molesting molest-ing the more valuable ;iewelry. The safe, -which stands in the. roar, slightly slight-ly protected from the street view, was not tampered with, either. The night watchman believes that the burglary was committed between 5 a. m. and 9 p. m. Sunday, but the' police are of the opinion thnt; it occurred oc-curred Sunday morning while it was Ht ill dark. This opinion is based upon the fact that Urn front of the store, from which the rings and watch chains were stolen, presents unobstructed view from tlie street and the burglars hardly would hnvo been bold enough to jeopardize their escape, no matter how great their cupidity, by appearing in the front of the store, conspicuous from tho street, in broad daylight. |
