Special to Tho Tribune. OGDEN", Oct. 14. A fire that started r from some unexplained cause in the main building of the Ogden Sewer Pipe & Clay company at 10:17 this forenoon, one of the most important industries in Ogclen, destroyed tho entire build-", build-", ing and all of its contents, the firemen working against odds, owing to the scarcity of water, and the fact that three-quarters of a mile of hose had .-to bo laid. The building, which was , 'of frame and corrugated iron, contained the engine house, the boiler room and 'all of the machincrj- of the plant, and, in addition, had thousands of pieces of sewer pipe which were drying iu H . tho annex of the building. The ma- chinerv, building and the manufactured Hl pipe is a total loss, and the property loss is estimated by W. B. Porterfield Hj at $45,000, with insurance of only ssooo. j Just how the fire originated is not i 3'et known. There were in all six raon on tho grounds, this being Sunday, and two of them were in the building that was burned. Three of the fivo big kilns in which the sewer pipe is burned were afire and two were empty. Tlioso were not damaged. The alarm was given to the department and there was a. prompt response, but. owing to the fact that the water was scarce, and the additional fact that tho structure was all aflame when they arrived, tho plant was a total loss. The insurance carried was as follows: Royal S2.000 Colonial of Hartford 2.000 Phoenix of Hartford 2.000 National of Hartford 2m JR.000 This represents the insurance loss, and. as stated, the property loss, is $-13, 000, a net loss to the company of $37,-000. $37,-000. But this is not all. Several thousands of dollars worth of pipe were , drying in the sheds and this property j was Tost. In addition the compan3' employs forty men and tho majority of these will be out of work until the plant is rebuilt. W. B. Porterfield, the B maaiager and secretary, states that tho plant will undoubtedly be rebuilt after iio has communicated with his prin-cipals. prin-cipals. But the company will be a fur- H ther loser, possibly, in the matter of time contracts for pipe for Utah and H export contracts for pipe, none of which is now on hand, the marlcc-t having cleaned up the manufactured simply, and. the supply in course of manufac-ture manufac-ture having been destroyed. |
