Show WATER RIGHTS FOR CITUGAIN UP Claimants of Alleged Rights in Big Cottonwood Want the Earth. NOW DEMAND FROM THE CITY ENORMOUS SUM Representatives of City and Owners of Alleged Rights Hold Conference. Owners of alleged water rights in Big Cottonwood now ask the city the enormous enor-mous sum of $255,000 for a transfer of thoso alleged rights to tho city. At a meeting held in tho office of Mayor Thompson Thursday between representatives of the city and thoso of tho Progress company, to whom were transferred certain alfeged rights, it be-camo be-camo apparent to those representing tho city that, were the city to purchase the Kriudson & Bagley rights, it would only result in the city becoming in-vcU'vcd in-vcU'vcd in lawsuits to protect those rights from alleged claims held both above anil below the Knudsou & Bag-ley Bag-ley rights, or, a3 they aro better known, tlio Knudsou Mill rights. Those present at the- meeting representing repre-senting tho city were Mayor Thompson, Thomp-son, Councilmcn Mulvcy and Tuddcn-ham, Tuddcn-ham, City Attorney Dininny, City Engineer En-gineer L." C. Kelsey and Superintendent of Waterworks F. L. Hines. -nose representing rep-resenting the Kmidson and Progress company rights were R. Knudson, J. P. Cnhoon,' George Curley and Attorney Samuel King. One Proposition Discussed. The only matter which was talked of in a definite manner was the offer which the city made about a week ago of $:i0,000 for the Knudsou Mill rights. Knudson & Bnglcy. at the time the offer of-fer was made, asked .G5,000 for the rights, but Thursday they came down to" $50,000. These rights of Knudson '& Bagley are the only rights which the city recognir.es as being at all valid, lmt nevertheless tho Progress company claims the new power rights about a mile above the mill and verj- near the intake of the conduit, and' for these rights they ask tho sum of $100,000. Then also the Progress company and those interested in it claim the Spring creek rights some distance below the mill, for which $135,000 is asked. These Spring creek rights arc those on which the Morris administration obtained an option by paying $400 and then forfeited forfeit-ed the $40u. Mayor Thompson positively refused to consider the matter at all. and it was left unsettled in so far as tho city is concerned, although tho Progress people peo-ple stated that they wished to consider consid-er the matter further,, and would no doubt at a later date present a more definite proopsition to the city. May Go Into tho Courts. Councilman Mulvcy stated after the meeting that the cit)' cannot recognize any other rights than the Knudson & Bagley rights, and that every effort has been made by the representatives of the city haying the matter in hand to reach if possible some amicable 6ctlcment, but over- effort has been futile. Mrl Mulvey says that he feels that tho onlv way now open is to havo the matter threshed out in the courts. Before the meeting adjourned Mavor Thompson suggested; as a last resort, that the city should name one representative, repre-sentative, the Progress compau- name another and these two should select a third person and that these three should arbitrate the matter. This offer was not accepted, however, and the meetiug adjourned, subject to the call of the Mayor at such time as tho Progress people peo-ple may intimate that they havo any turther offers to make. |
