Gonzaio de Quosada, Minister from Cuba to tho United States, todaj' conferred with Secretary Root regarding the situation in Cuba. Mr. Quesada expressed full confidence iu tho friendly attitudo of this Government toward "Cuba. Tho battleship Texas, carrying marines ma-rines ordered to Havana, which vessel had been anchored outside tho Virginia Vir-ginia capes since last night to await further orders from Secrotary Taft. was ordered to proceed ou her way to Cuba. After tho Texas left Newport News a message camo from Sccrotary Taft saying say-ing he wanted nioro marines, but did not need any nioro battleships. Dispatches were sent to him explaining explain-ing that tho Texas was being sent merely as a transport, and Secretary Taft then assented to tho orders for the Texas lo proceed. Beside tho British Brit-ish steamer Marion, just secured as a transport, the War department announced an-nounced that it had chartered the steamer Andes, now at Havana, as a troop transport. She will proceed at once to Port Tampa and it is expected will take lo Havana tho light battery ordered from Port Sheridan. General Bell, chief of staff, announced an-nounced that tho transport Sumner would sail tonight from New York for Havana. Sho will carry tho first detachment de-tachment of troops forthe Cuban expedition, ex-pedition, consisting of two battalions of infantry from tho Plattsburg, N. V., barracks, and one battalion of engineers engin-eers from the Washington barracks, 900 men in all. Tho troops will bo under command of Col. Cowlee of the Jviith mlantry. Brig. Geu.'W. P. Duvall, commanding command-ing the Department of the Gulf, with headquarters at Atlanta, was at the War department in conference with Gen. Bell, chief of staff, and others, with regard to the movement of the troops in his department that have beon ordered to Newport News for the embarkation for Cuba. Gen. Duvall was one of the American officers 3ent to Berlin to represent tho United States arm' at the mauoeuvors of the German troops. |
