A Turkish gentloman with a nice tasto in pearls was arretted recently in a jeweler's shop in iug Boulevard Boule-vard St. Martin. Ho walked into the shop and told tha jcwelor that ho wac engaged to bo married, and wanted to buy his tisncco a S'JoOO pearl necklace. While ho was examining two or three necklaces with the hero of a large pair of spectacles, one of tho shop assistants noticed that he was apparently lickinc the pearls. The assistant took m ona of the necklaces which the Turkish gentleman had just laid down, and noticing that the cord was bitten through, gave tho alarm. Tho polico cumo m and arrested the Turk, who protested angrily an-grily and demanded to bo searched. Ho was searched and no pearls wero found on him, but tho jeweler insisted on his be-iujr be-iujr taken to the police station. The Turk was there givon a strong emetic on tho authority of a magistrate, and was found to have swallowed two riearls worth SdOO and $300. |
